The Story of Our First Date by Kaitlyn

We met speed dating for family home evening. I almost didn’t go, but my friend finally got me to agree to go. I talked to probably 20 different guys but after we had finished Michael was the only one that I wanted to keep talking to. We definitely hit it off during our speed date so when he asked me for my number after I was so excited.

That night he invited me to go hot tubbing with him and some of his friends. After that he asked me to come over and watch a movie at his apartment. He didn’t know this when we met but I had seen him around the apartment complex before and always thought he was really cute.

  1. I too met my husband at Singles Ward! One night at an FHE activity I caught him starting at me and I thought he was a total catch!! At the end of the activity I saw him heading to the door so I hurried over and I asked HIM OUT!!! For our first date we went on a group date with some friends. We went to a local store and split up into couples, we wrote down a list of random things we found throughout the store and then traded lists, sending each other on scavenger hunts to find the things written on the other couples list. The first couple back to the meeting spot with all the items on the list won!It was a lot of fun and of course we won! After, we went back to my house for dessert and all sat around chatting. I remember going home feeling totally smitten that night and hoping he'd ask me out again. After a week of not hearing from him I was sure he'd decided he didn't like me. I was chatting with my best friend that attended YSA with us and telling her how I wish he'd call and ask me out again, and 5 minutes later he text asking for a 2nd date!! I was ecstatic! Lots of dates and 5 months later we were married ❤️

  2. I met my husband as a freshman at Drake. We were friends until a biochemistry project brought us together. Yep, biochem...how romantic. During the project, we were the only two in our group that could seem to make time to work on the project. We would meet to look through medical journals about our topic. Then one night as I was leaving, he asked if I would like to go on a date on Saturday.

The first date was not what most expect. I had been at a student leadership meeting all day. When I got home at 8pm, I called him. He asked if I wanted to come over and watch a movie at his apartment. So I did. Needless to say, it was an UNEVENTFUL...I fell asleep watching the movie. Not because it was boring, or he was boring...I was exhausted. When the movie was over, he gently woke me and I apologized (secretly, I was horrified) and left. When I got home to my house, I found a note in my jeans pocket from him. It was so sweet. He said that he was happy that I felt comfortable with him and that he liked the feeling of protecting me while I was sleeping.

We have been married for 18 years. He still protects me, loves me and makes me feel young.

  3. I met my boyfriend on a dating app called Bumble. I never understood the phrase "Opposites attract" until I met him. Our first date was on a Sunday afternoon at a coffee shop in Ankeny. We discovered our shared love and experience for service trips, our faith, our family history had a lot of similarities and we even had a similar dating histories. However there was just one problem....I was NOT feeling it. As far as I was concerned, this date was a one and done! You see, when Dennis is nervous he fills the silence by talking, ALOT, lol. I quickly began to lose interest and started to withdraw my body language to send the message, "I'm not interested". However Dennis was reading the situation a bit differently and knew that if he didn't act quick he would lose any opportunity to prove me wrong. As we wrapped up the date he asked me for a second date before the first was even over! I was clearly pegged in a corner and didn't know what to do. Honestly I don't remember what I even said, but I remember what I felt, thinking "Who is this dude, he clearly can't read this situation!!". But little did I know at the time that he was reading the situation just right, he knew if he didn't get an offer for a second date in that it was over. We arranged for a second date on the following Tuesday and I can honestly say the rest is history! It's been 18 months and we still maintain our differences on several subjects but balance and compliment each other in a very healthy way. When others continue to ask you when you two are getting married I think there is a pretty sure sign that they are seeing something healthy too. Moral of this story is, "Don't judge a book by a cover", you never know what you will discover if you take the time to actually know someone.

  4. My story is not quite as wholesome. ;-) it was Halloween night, 1990, and I had just had my heart broken my a guy who was secretly engaged to someone else while we were together- I found out via a letter that afternoon. So I dressed up as Marilyn Quayle (Halloween and all) and went out dancing at a nightclub with my friend and her husband. I was getting sleepy, and as I walked past a cute guy I yawned in his face. He told me I shouldn’t be yawning but dancing, so we danced. Then we sat and talked for quite awhile. He wasn’t trying to pick me up- he had absolutely no game and was as dorky as I was. I loved that about him. We’ve been married for 25 years, and he is still my person. <3
